Thursday 29, Friday 30 & Saturday 31 October, 4–6 pm, with artist Ada LaNerd (Quartiers Jeunes 13, Paris 13th)
Meme, sticker & radio workshop with artists Rose Drean and Ada LaNerd.
But where do memes come from?! Who creates them, and why do they become so popular? What happens when a meme leaves the screen and invades public space? This workshop explores internet culture, its codes and its modes of viral dissemination through creation, appropriation and remixing at a time marked by the return of censorship and the emergence of technofascism.
Starting from a participatory collection of 67 visual and sound memes—humorous images, viral phrases that seem to come from nowhere, silly sound effects and “earworms” that get stuck in your head and come back endlessly—participants will create their own content and contribute to the making of a new collective brainrot. They will invent absurd characters, compose a sticker and display it on a digiframe, a public service for infinite scrolling. Each production can then be copied, transformed, expanded and recirculated.
The workshop draws on hacker practices and DIY cultures: repurposing tools, cobbling together devices, sharing resources and creating autonomous spaces for transmission and expression.
The sticker-maker and the radio thus become sites of collective virality IRL (In Real Life). We cut, paste, assemble, code, repurpose, record and broadcast… Images, phrases, jingles, voices, sounds and fragments of brainrot are assembled and remixed endlessly into a kind of “exquisite corpse,” travelling from one medium to another.
Between visual and sound culture, the workshop offers a hands-on exploration of memetics: how does information spread? What happens to a meme when it changes context, format or voice? How can an idea circulate without being reproduced identically?
There is no need to be an expert in computing, graphic design or radio. Simply bring an image, a sound, an internet reference or a strange idea to share. Here, we learn by tinkering, drawing, repurposing and mischievously contaminating our collective imaginaries.
Ada LaNerd
Half-body, half-waves, Ada LaNerd moves at the intersection of performance art and hacktivism. A radio artist and member of systerserver and π-node, she has been active since 2013 within Hackstub, a hackerspace in Strasbourg. As a hacqueen, she shares a cyberfeminist approach to hacking rooted in popular education, embracing what she calls popular hacking: practices and interventions that confront systems of oppression.
Rose Drean
Through a culture of hacking understood as “learning how to make things by sharing,” Rose Drean experiments with electronics, fermentation, systems and network administration, popular education and audiovisual creation. As a cyberpunk feminist, her work questions the place of technology and turns its mechanisms of control around in order to repurpose them and align them with simple, playful needs. She ferments kefir [to see] and [to drink], and repairs discarded objects, giving them a playful and cheeky place in public space.
She trains with scenographers and artist friends, as well as through the interhacker.space network, as part of an “ongoing, self-directed education.” On a daily basis, she leads “popular education” workshops and creates artistic, fairground and cultural installations as co-founder of La Bobine hackerspace in the Loir & Share countryside (41).
Organised as part of the exhibition “MAGNANRAMA”, this workshop is produced by Bétonsalon – centre for art and research in partnership with Quartier Jeunes 13 and Plan libre, with the support of DRAC Île-de-France as part of the “Vacances culturelles” programme.
