Collages of photographs, photocopies, scans, made from whatever is available. The texts record fragments of real or imagined daily life. Typed in Antique Olive using word processing software, they are then subjected to the wringer of the photocopier. What remains are a few fragments of Optima, Univers, Arial, Courier, Times, and other fonts that are used by default for the headings of in-class assignments, the answer keys for the Baccalaureate exams, and which are printed in large, bold type, stuck to classroom walls to tell us how to do what right.
Romain Grateau
Romain Grateau, born in 1991 in Ancenis (Loire-Atlantique), lives and works in the Paris suburbs. He graduated from the École des Beaux-Arts in Angers and the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon, and holds a master’s degree in visual arts from HEAD Geneva. Since 2019, he has been part of Pauline Perplexe, an independent production and exhibition space located in Arcueil (Val-de-Marne).
Romain Grateau’s practice is based on the encounter between almost immaterial fragments of poetry and massive sculptural media. He is as interested in the means and supports of inscription as he is in the words themselves. While he has a great interest in technique in all its forms, whether artisanal or mechanical, ancient, modern, or contemporary, he primarily seeks to explore the fantasies—of mastery, power, or luxury—that surround it. Echoing this research, through sampling, diversion or in situ installations, he highlights how, in use, words and things always elude their primary functions.
