Seminar of the Académie vivante directed by Emmanuelle Fabre
The Académie Vivante (Living Academy), new experimental space of research co-directed by the Epigenetics and Cell Fate Unit and Bétonsalon – Center of Art and Research, presents a seminar focusing on redesigning the concept of metabolism through examining the emergence of ideas and behaviours.
Driven by the mirage of a breath of fresh air, the spontaneous generation, software reboots, new trends, etc., the seminar seeks to navigate the pendulum between absorption and propagation; phases of desire and impossibility. Is free-will or creativity a mere reduction to how we metabolise that which surrounds us?
Directed by Emmanuelle Fabre (Laboratory Manager of Biology and Dynamics of Chromosomes, INSERM / CNRS), this seminar invites participants to explore—through various approaches and scientific disciplines—the phenomenon of the emergence of new thoughts, of innovative forms and behaviours and changing paradigms.

The concept of cycles of civilization (periods of glory, break, decay, etc.) partially exist still today in many disciplines, from geography to art history, through economics, biology, etc.
Thinking of the history of sciences as a succession of thought paradigms interspersed by moments of rupture, shaped by a trepidation for considering knowledge as an evolution that tends towards process.

What new tools or heuristic approaches can be used to demonstrate the current hypotheses of the Biology and Dynamics of Chromosomes Unit? Ten years ago, Emmanuelle Fabre founded a research project with physicist Christopher Zimmer that was interested in astronomical research. This experimental collaboration has applied various methods for analyzing the positions of the stars with the arms of chromosomes.
Emmanuelle Fabre offers participants to experience a collective reflection that goes beyond her own research on the polarization of chromosomes. The researcher seeks, alongside the ideas and contributions of the participants (concrete and abstract), to explore the possibility for new research projects. While conceptual blockages and materials are often feared, they offer investigations spaces that generate new perspectives and approaches.
Emmanuelle Fabre is a researcher at the CNRS. Director of research, Fabre leads the Biology and Dynamics of Chromosomes Unit at l’Université Paris Diderot. Her research focuses on fundamental questions of cellular organization, especially that of the nuclei. Fabre’s current research interests include the dynamics of chromosomes when they suffer damage, such as double-strand breaks in DNA.

Session 3: "Relationship between science, art, innovation and cooking"
Speaker: Christophe Lavelle (CNRS / Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle / ISCC, Paris)
Location : Bétonsalon – Center for Art and Research, Paris
At the beginning of the 1970s, Gault and Millau tried to breath a breath of fresh air into French cuisine by encouraging chefs to opt for a new way of cooking, with new principles (light sauces, shorter cooking, and highlighting inventiveness). Twenty years later, the wave of Molecular Gastronomy is sweeping the kitchen, with the use of new ingredients (mostly hydrocolloids from the food industry) and new techniques (whipping siphons, liquid nitrogen, sous-vide). Today, the evolution continues with food-pairing and « note-à-note » cuisine, alongside a series with new constraints (environmental, ethical) that are becoming significantly pressing issues.
Working at the National Museum of Natural History and the Institute of Communication Sciences in Paris, Christophe Lavelle is interested in all facets of food (physical, chemical, biological, anthropological, technical, artistic). He teaches in several higher education institutions (Universities Paris VI, Paris VII, Cergy-Pontoise, Aix-Marseille, Lyon, Lille, Toulouse, SupBioTech Paris, Le Cordon Bleu) and regularly lectures to the public and food professionals in France and abroad.
- Session 3 of the Académie vivante : "Relationship between science, art, innovation and cooking" with Christophe Lavelle, May 11, 2016. Bétonsalon - Center for Art and Research, Paris
Wednesday May 4, 6pm-8pm
Session 2: "Psychoanalysis and the Emergence of Autonomous Thought"
Speaker: Jérémie Sinzelle, psychiatrist and psychoanalyst based in Paris
Location: Bibliothèque Inter-Universitaire de Médecine (BIUM)
For the second session, Emmanuelle Fabre discussed with Jérémie Sinzelle (psychiatrist and psychoanalyst) questions concerning the emergence of ideas through the prism of psychoanalysis. How do new ideas emerge? What are the conditions that facilitate this emergence of ideas in the context of psychoanalysis? How does psychiatry and psychoanalysis work on these questions regarding artistic and scientific creation?
Doctor by trade, Jérémie Sinzelle is a psychiatrist-psychoanalyst practicing privately in Paris and working at a consultation centre for children. In the academic field, Sinzelle has previously focused on the history of schizophrenia. His current research explores the issues concerning the appearance of concepts in psychiatric semantics and discourses that establish new medical pathologies.
- Session 2 of the Académie vivante : "Psychoanalysis and the Emergence of Autonomous Thought", May 4, 2016, with Jérémie Sinzelle, May 4, 2016. Bibliothèque Inter-Universitaire de Médecine (BIUM), Paris
Wednesday April 6, 6-8pm, Bétonsalon – Center for Art and Research, Paris
Session 1: « The pollination of ideas: Contained Measures of Shifting States by Otobong Nkanga » directed by Emmanuelle Fabre (Inserm, CNRS)
In the framework of the Académie vivante workshop, the first course of the seminar begun with an encounter with the artwork of Otobong Nkanga, Contained Measures of Shifting States, presented at the Centre Pompidou from 11 April to 13 June 2016, to investigate the mechanisms of the emergence of discourses and their capacity for speculation.
