Rester. Étranger family - residence at Bétonsalon

From August 20 to 25

From August 20 to 25 2021 the co-authors belonging to the Rester. Étranger family Nicole Koffi, Barbara Manzetti, Sabrina Pennacchietti and Caroline Sebilleau, will be in res­i­dence at Bétonsalon along with Juliette Pollet, curator at the con­ser­va­trice au CNAP, and her assis­tant Daisy Lambert. The authors will transfer the func­tioning of the pro­ces­sual and lasting work Rester.
Etranger titled Personnellement je préfère merveilleux (Personally I prefer the mar­vel­lous) or in koulango bound­oukou Mien mi koro zingré tchiré, through a mech­a­nism that acti­vates family memory.

“What is the point of an artist who works alone on her oeuvre? replies the Rester. Etranger family. I am the type of person who awakens in a work, mur­murs within it, lives in it, with others who have found their place there. People who do not have the same rights I have. The same right to live some­where as I do. Who do not receive the same respect as I do from others?”

Both a work and an author, for the past few years the Rester. Étranger family has been per­forming its entry into France and into the French lan­guage. At this geo­graph­ical, admin­is­tra­tive, legal, lit­eral, lit­erary and poetic threshold, a choral writing emerges, which they call fle, the acronym for FLE, Français Langue Étrangère (French as a for­eign lan­guage). The lan­guage, enhanced by expres­sions from the authors’ maternal lan­guages is per­formed, printed and hand­written on lasting and per­ish­able sur­faces such as floors, walls win­dows, posters, post its, maps, paper ribbon, or are wel­comed as books, a film, a radio cre­ation.

Bi hè yebor goussèguè lè tou tchilibor, we are the women of the Rester. Etranger family. In the month of June 2020 eight of us are writing a letter to apply for the call for pro­jects “La vie bonne” launched by AWARE (Archives of Women Artists, Research and Exhibitions) and the Cnap (Centre national des arts plas­tiques). Women artists were invited to respond to the ques­tions Judith Butler asked in 2012 when she received the Theodor Arno prize, “How does one lead a good life in a bad life?” appro­pri­ating and trans­forming the ques­tion the German philoso­pher raised. How does one pursue a good life “within a world in which the good life is struc­turally or sys­tem­at­i­cally fore­closed for so many?” Judith Butler sees the second problem as deter­mining “the form this ques­tion can take for us today. Or in other words: how does the his­tor­ical time in which we are living con­di­tion and per­meate the form of the ques­tion itself?”

An immer­sion in the work Rester. Étranger, which seeks to ensure that the transfer of the rights of the work to Centre National des Arts Plastiques takes place under eth­ical con­di­tions. They will be accom­pa­nied by other authors who belong to the family, including Prince Pacôme Nangoh, trans­lator and inter­preter into the Agni lan­guage (Ivory Coast), Youssouf Hassan, spe­cialist of sur­vival archi­tec­tures and Hassan Abdallah and Bartolomeo Terrade, sound aritsts. Olivier Marbœuf, invited in his role of pro­ducer, will work with the family to reflect upon a film ver­sion of the work.

This will also be an oppor­tu­nity to con­front the acces­si­bility of inter­gen­er­a­tional works with the audi­ences’ dif­ferent levels of empow­er­ment.
