Workshop - 3D DIY modelling and artistic creation animated by Tran Minh Duc
How are new 3D technologies incorporated into art projects today ? Many technics such as object mapping, holograms, replics via 3D printing are now accessible. In the hands of some individuals, these technics contribute to solve historical and archaeological enquiries left unresolved by science. The reconstitution of a sculpture which fragments are dispersed throughout different museums around the world is now facillitate, just as the publication and the diffusion of proofs of exactions perpetrated by political regimes notably thanks to collective scanning and citizens of garbage and archives (Statsi’s files in East Germany or those dispersed in the streets of Kiev after the destitution of president Viktor Ianoukovytch in 2014 in Ukraine).
- Workshop « 3D DIY modelling and artistic creation », in parallel to Anywhere But Here, Bétonsalon - Center for Art and Research, Paris, 2016.
Laying on this collective dynamic, Tran Minh Duc proposes to experiment during three intensive afternoons (Saturdays September 24, October 8 and 15, 2016) new "low-tech" 3D technology – spatialization of exotic fruits peel, captation and 3D modelling, holograms, casting – upon the Académie vivante program on prince Canh’s costume at Bétonsalon – Center for Art and Research.
Prince Canh, Nguyễn Phúc Cảnh, although nearly unknown in France, is a seminal figure in the history of the relations between Southeast Asia and France. He was sent in Versailles with a delegation at only five years old to convince Louis XVI to support his dynasty. This trip upended the political spectrum of the region and the relations between France and Vietnam. Tran Minh Duc is interested in the overlooked details of the young monarch’s visit in France, and more particularly in the different costumes he wore. The workshop will have access to exceptional archives and will propose technical activities on 3D modelling. These experimentations will be integrated to Tran Minh Duc’s performance presented at Bétonsalon – Center for Art and Research on October 15, 2016.
Tran Minh Duc (1982, Hô-Chi-Minh-Ville, Vietnam) is a Vietnamese artist. His interest lies in the Past, its fragmentary modes of diffusion and the way it interacts with our present time. With his artistic practice, he investigates Vietnamese urban life characteristics. In order to do so, he studies the interaction between individual and collective spheres, between ideas such as the local/ internal and foreign/external.
He was invited in Japan, Myanmar and Cambodia for residencies and participated to the following exhibitions (selection) : Global Cities, Center Stage, Baltimore, United-States, 2014 ; 15th Anniversary : Nha San Duc, Hanoi, Vietnam, 2014 ; Beyond Pressure : Festival of Performance Art, Yangon, Myanmar, 2012 ; Poetic Politic, Kadist Art Foundation, San Francisco, United-States, 2012 ; Tokyo Story, TWS Shibuya Gallery, Tokyo, Japon, 2012 ; Open Edit : AAA Mobile Library, San Art, Hô-Chi-Minh City, Vietnam, 2011.

As a way to initiate the workshop, Tran Minh Duc has proposed to the participants to wander around avenue d’Ivry in the 13th arrondissement of Paris to discover places (restaurant, supermarket, shopping mall, buildings, temple) that are witnesses of the shared history between France and Vietnam. During this walk, the group has collected several elements to be later used in Bétonsalon - Center for Art and Research, so as to create a peculiar environment evocative of Vietnam (smell, taste, touch, feel, material first impression). A degustation of mangousteen and durian would follow, as well as the modeling of the later fruit and the beginning of the experimentation of the 3D captures, taken all over the course of the afternoon.

Saturday, October 8, 2016
This second Saturday was devoted to produce the objets needed for the performance When I was 6 or 7 years old in Paris which is related to the trip of the young Vietnamese Prince Nguyễn Phúc Cảnh in France, during Louis XVI’s reign. Participants were divided into three groups: sewing, modelling for 3D print, making hologram. In parallel to theses activites, time for discussion enabled the evolution of the shape of the performance which Tran Minh Duc along with the participants of the workshop will present the following Saturday to end the workshop.

Saturday October 15, 2016 at 5 p.m.: performance When I was 6 or 7 years old in Paris
During this event, Tran Minh Duc and the participants of the workshop 3D DIY modelling and artistic creation performed the productions they made which are linked to the artist’s researches on the Prince Nguyễn Phúc Cảnh’s trip to France. Within this workshop, designed as an introduction to his large-scale project, Tran Minh Duc worked with the participants more specifically on the headdress worn by the prince in a portrait made during his stay in Versailles.
