As part of the exhibition « The Untamable Hand », Hedwig Houben will lead a two-day workshop on June 19 and 20 at the Atelier Néerlandais in Paris, in collaboration with researcher Rob Leijdekkers.
Mastery and control contribute as much to our sense of stability as they do to the reassuring illusion of it. Yet the world we live in is also shaped by disorder, inconsistencies, tensions, materials, and smells that we often prefer to ignore. It is uncomfortable, frequently unsettling, sometimes repulsive. And it is precisely by confronting these sensations—discomfort, unease, rejection—that we can begin to understand what, within our structures, resists change.
In this workshop, we’ll delve into the unpredictable folds, hidden margins, and worn-out mechanisms of the systems that shape us. What contradictions do we repress, even as they define us? And how might we, starting from these zones of confusion and discomfort, reimagine ways of learning and sharing knowledge? We’ll also explore the gritty, unconventional, and overlooked aspects of our educational systems. What are the realities we actually operate in, and how are they structured? How might we reimagine these systems to better reflect the complexity of the world?
The workshop will be held in English and include performative situations, readings, and group discussions on collective dynamics in artistic pedagogies.
