Bétonsalon - Center for Art and Research, École
Nationale Supérieure d’Arts de Paris-Cergy and 42
are delighted to announce the second edition of the hackathon Data & Art.
The Hackathon “Data & Art” is an intensive workshop, free upon registration, which brings together young artists and coders in order to develop innovative responses to tomorrow’s artistic and cultural challenges. For its second edition, the Hackathon will be led co-jointly by Emmanuelle Lainé, artist, and Natasha Marie Llorens, curator, supported by the team of Bétonsalon – Center for Art and Research. Multidisciplinary team will be formed on spot and its members will work on projects that will be presented to a jury. In the sci-fi novel Pattern Recognition (2003), William Gibson wrote that “We have no future because our present is too volatile. We have only risk management. The spinning of the given moment’s scenarios. Pattern recognition.” In the art world, the works that are produced exceed their own physical borders and include the context that participated in their creation: conversations, gestures, invisible traces of a profuse ecosystem. At a time when information, images and sounds circulate and mix, how can we record and preserve what is ephemeral?
42 is a French private computer-programming school created by Xavier Niel (founder of Illiad-Free), with several associates such as Nicolas Sadirac, Kwane Yamgname and Florian Bucher. Since the first classes that took place in 2013, the training has been inspired by the changes brought by internet, and through a “peer-to-peer” learning. The school provides a curriculum completely free-of-charge to its students, emphasizing on high quality skills in programming and innovation. The name of the school is a direct reference to Douglas Adams’ The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, in which 42 is the answer to the question of life, of universe and of all the rest.
L’École Nationale Supérieure d’Arts de Paris-Cergy (ENSAPC) is supported by the Ministère de culture et de la communication and produces artists and creatives of international renown in different disciplinary fields. It was founded in Cergy-Pontoise, near Paris, in the 1970s (Vald’Oise). Determinedly cross-disciplinary, ENSAPC is conceived as a laboratory of artistic practice, standing out as springboard for creative and intellectual production. To nurture a critical approach to contemporay challenges, the school is nimble, responsive, and alert to new fields of knowledge that invite the exploration of new territory.
Emmanuelle Lainé (born in 1973 in Paris) lives and works in Marseille. She graduated from the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Paris. Elaborating on the specificities of each exhibition venue, Emmanuelle Lainé uses her host institution furniture and architectural features to provide a “methodology of places” that is an interface between spaces, works and their audience. Her practice consists in monumental in-situ installations that blur distinctions between the different media she uses. This process allows her to create a complex cognitive space where several temporalities coexist, making sense only through the eye of the beholder, considered as the privileged agent of the exhibition.
Natasha Marie Llorens is an independent curator and writer based in Marseille and New York. She has two on-going curatorial research projects: one exploring the relationship between violence and representation in contemporary art from a feminist perspective, and the other about critical contemporary painting. She has curated exhibitions at the International Studio and Curatorial Program (Brooklyn), REVERSE Gallery (Brooklyn), the Project Space at the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts (NYC), Ramapo College (New Jersey), the Zabludowicz Gallery (London), MomentArt (Brooklyn). She has taught at Columbia University, the Cooper Union and Eugene Lang College, all in New York City, and is currently adjunct faculty in the Curatorial Studies MA program at Parsons in Paris.
